Abstract

This technical guide provides practical and tailored recommendations for the cultivation of sesame (Sesamum indicum) in Benin, a strategic oilseed crop primarily grown in the northern regions of the country. This guide covers all essential stages, including the selection of varieties with short growth cycles, soil preparation and drainage, sowing techniques, fertilization, crop maintenance, integrated pest and disease management, as well as harvesting and post-harvest practices. The guide highlights the nutritional value of sesame and its economic potential, supported by an analysis showing profitability with an average net income of 85,695 FCFA per hectare and a profitability index of 1.33. It also identifies the main challenges faced by sesame producers in Benin, including low yields due to traditional farming practices, limited access to improved seeds, climate vulnerability, and post-harvest losses. To enhance sustainable production and ensure the development of the sesame sector in Benin, this guide recommends adopting good agricultural practices such as crop rotation, controlled irrigation, appropriate mechanization, local value addition through processing, and producer training. These measures aim to increase productivity, strengthen climate change resilience, optimize rural incomes, and consolidate Bénin’s position in national and international markets.
