Abstract

The fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda J.E. Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is an exotic pest that causes significant yield losses in maize in Benin. Since its invasion, several alternative control methods like neem oil and Palmida soap solution, have been developed by researchers to reduce reliance on synthetic chemical insecticides and preserve human health and the environment. However, very few farmers use these available alternative control methods in the management of FAW. Thus, the present study attempted to assess based on empirical data the factors affecting the knowledge and use of alternative control methods. A field survey was carried out among 493 farmers randomly selected in the districts of Kétou in South-Eastern, Djidja in Centre and N’Dali in North-Eastern Bénin based on semi-structured questionnaires. The results showed that the majority of farmers surveyed (55.78%) are aware of the alternative control methods, but very few (1.42%) used them. No difficulties have been encountered by farmers using these alternative control methods. The results of the logistic estimation model also indicated that the knowledge of alternative control methods by producers in the management of FAW was significantly (p < 0.05) influenced by age, level of education, access to agricultural credits, occurrence of FAW attacks, membership in a farmer group, availability of alternative control methods in the living area of farmers and contact with research institutions. However, further studies are needed to improve existing mechanisms and channels for disseminating innovations and promote participatory and inclusive research, and improve their uptake and adoption by producers.
